56th Annual World Economic Forum kicks off in Davos

This year, a record number of world leaders are gathering in the Swiss Alps for the invitation-only World Economic Forum (WEF) around the theme “A Spirit of Dialogue” as geopolitical tumult continues to rage.

The annual event, which has been taking place since 1971, in Davos, Switzerland, was founded on a vision of that businesses should serve all stakeholders, rather just shareholders, including employees, suppliers and the wider community. This week it brings together government, business and civil society leaders from Jan. 19 to 23 in the highest town in Europe to set the year’s agenda for how leaders can make the world a better place for all.

According to the WEF website, over the years, the program has focused on the evolving challenges facing the world and increasingly emphasizes the importance of dialogue as “threats to world stability are multiplying.”

In somewhat related news, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States would impose 10% duties on eight European countries that mobilized troops in a show of support for Denmark, which does not want to be acquired by the United States. Countries include Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland.

The tariffs would go into effect start of February and increase to 25% in June unless “a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland,” @realDonalTrump posted on Truth Social.
